A gravel driveway that washes out every spring isn’t a gravel problem — it’s a grading and drainage problem. The most common mistake in driveway construction is skipping the prep work: proper crown, adequate base, correct slope, and drainage that moves water off the surface and away from the edges.
At Solid Ground, we build and repair gravel driveways and rural roads across the Kansas City metro. Whether you need a brand new driveway cut in from scratch, a washed-out road restored after heavy rain, or an existing driveway regraded and refurbished — we do it right the first time so you’re not calling us back every year.

Most driveway problems come down to the same three things. We address all of them on every job.
A flat driveway holds water in the center, which softens the base and causes ruts. A properly crowned driveway is slightly higher in the middle so water sheds to the sides and drains away.
Water that has nowhere to go will find its own path — usually through your driveway. Proper ditching, culverts, and outlet planning keep water moving away from the surface and edges.
Gravel on top of soft clay without geotextile fabric or a compacted base will sink and mix with the soil over time. The right base prep determines how long a driveway lasts.

Cost depends on length, width, terrain, and material choice. Most residential driveways run $1,200 to $3,000+ depending on scope. We can often give you a solid ballpark by phone — for longer driveways or rural roads we’ll schedule a site visit at no charge.
Washouts are almost always a drainage problem, not just a gravel problem. Adding more gravel without fixing the drainage just delays the next washout. We assess the slope, crown, ditching, and culvert situation and fix the root cause so it stops happening.
On KC area clay soil, yes — it makes a significant difference. Geotextile fabric separates the gravel from the clay underneath, preventing the gravel from sinking and mixing with the soil over time. It also suppresses weeds. We include it on new driveway builds as standard practice.
Yes — if the base is still solid and there’s enough existing material to work with, we can rake, regrade, and reshape the driveway to restore crown and drainage without hauling in a full load of new gravel. Often this is all a driveway needs after a few years of use.
Most residential driveways are completed in a single day. Longer rural roads or more complex jobs may take 2 to 3 days. We’ll give you a realistic timeline during the consultation.
