What Is Forestry Mulching?

Forestry mulching is a single-step land clearing method where a specialized machine cuts, grinds, and mulches trees, brush, and vegetation directly where it stands. The result is a clean property covered in a layer of nutrient-rich wood mulch — no burning piles, no debris hauling, no topsoil disruption.

At Solid Ground, we run a Takeuchi TL12-R2 track loader paired with an FAE forestry mulcher head — heavy-duty equipment built for the dense brush, cedar, and hardwood that’s common across Jackson and Cass County properties.

Our realistic production rate is approximately 1 acre per day depending on vegetation density and terrain. We’d rather give you an honest timeline than overpromise and underdeliver.

Our Equipment

We run a Takeuchi TL12-R2 compact track loader paired with a FAE UML/SSL drum mulcher (factory-branded for Takeuchi). It is serious equipment for serious brush — our setup provides high production in most vegetation types.

The drum design grinds debris straight down instead of throwing it like a disc mulcher would, so we can work close to houses, vehicles, and fences without the risk. The TL12 is also compact enough to get into tight residential lots and along fence lines that bigger forestry equipment cannot reach.

Tree-size capacity

Softwoods like cedar: up to about 10 inches in diameter

Hardwoods like locust, walnut, and oak: up to about 6 inches in diameter

If your project has bigger material than that, we will be straight with you about it on the quote — sometimes we can stage it (drop the larger trees first, then mulch the rest), and sometimes a different approach is the right call.

How It Works

1

Free On-Site Quote

We come out, walk the property with you, and give you a straight-forward price. No gimmicks, no pressure.

2

Schedule the Job

Lead time is typically 2–3 weeks out. Working around a deadline (closing, build start, hunting season)? Let us know up front and we’ll do our best to fit it in.

3

Clear the Property

Small residential jobs are usually done in a single day. Larger jobs run roughly an acre per day depending on vegetation and terrain.

4

Walk the Site With You

Before we leave, we walk the finished job together so you know exactly what was done.

Forestry Mulching Pricing

We charge by the day, and we believe in showing our pricing up front — customers tell us they appreciate not having to guess.

$2,100 – $2,500
single-day jobs
$1,800 – $2,200
per day on multi-day jobs

Bigger projects get the lower rate because the cost of mobilizing the equipment, fuel, and travel gets spread across more productive hours. Where we land within each range depends on vegetation density, terrain, and access — heavier brush, steeper ground, or harder-to-reach properties move toward the top of the range; cleaner, easier sites land at the bottom.

Every quote starts with a free consultation. We can often give you a ballpark by phone — for larger or more complex jobs we’ll schedule a site visit at no charge. The price we quote is the price you pay — no surprises.

Forestry Mulching — Frequently Asked Questions

How much does forestry mulching cost in Jackson County, MO?

Our forestry mulching rate is $2,100 to $2,500 per day for single-day jobs and $1,800 to $2,200 per day for multi-day jobs. Most small residential projects are single-day. Larger acreage runs multi-day at the lower rate. Where we land within each range depends on vegetation density, terrain, and access. Start with a free consultation — we can often give you a ballpark by phone.

How many acres can you clear in a day?

Our honest average is approximately 1 acre per day for forestry mulching. Dense timber, steep terrain, or heavy cedar can slow that down. Lighter brush may go a bit faster. We’ll give you a realistic estimate after seeing your property — not a number we can’t back up.

How big a tree can you handle?

Tree-size capacity depends on the species. We comfortably handle softwoods like cedar up to about 10 inches in diameter, and hardwoods like locust, walnut, and oak up to about 6 inches. Bigger material than that we’ll discuss with you on the quote — sometimes we can stage the job (drop the larger trees first, then mulch the rest), and sometimes a different approach makes more sense.

Will forestry mulching kill the roots?

No — forestry mulching cuts down to or just below ground level, but it doesn’t remove root systems. For most brush and saplings, this is fine; the plants rarely come back aggressively. For invasive species like honeysuckle or buckthorn, some follow-up treatment may be needed to prevent regrowth.

What time of year is best for forestry mulching?

Forestry mulching works well year-round, so the best time is really whenever it fits your schedule. Winter has a few advantages — frozen ground means less rutting, bare trees make it easier to see what’s being cleared, and cooler temperatures are easy on the equipment. But summer is just as good a time to clear: overgrowth is at its worst and most visible then, and knocking it down opens your property back up for the season while cutting back the brush that harbors ticks, pests, and fire fuel. We mulch in every season — tell us what you’re dealing with and we’ll get it handled.

Can you work in wet conditions or on slopes?

Yes — our Takeuchi TL12-R2 has a track system that handles wet ground and moderate slopes where wheeled equipment can’t safely operate.

What’s the difference between forestry mulching and brush hogging?

Brush hogging mows surface vegetation and is best for grass, weeds, and light growth — we can cover 4 to 5 acres per day. Forestry mulching grinds woody vegetation, trees, and stumps into mulch and is slower but far more thorough. Not sure which you need? See our brush clearing page for a full side-by-side comparison.

Will forestry mulching damage my topsoil?

No — it’s one of the least disruptive clearing methods available. The mulch layer left behind actually protects topsoil from erosion and improves moisture retention. Unlike bulldozing or burning, forestry mulching leaves the soil structure largely intact.

Do I need any permits?

For typical residential brush clearing and forestry mulching in our service area, permits aren’t an issue. If your property is in an unusual situation — like inside a conservation easement, near a regulated waterway, or under HOA rules — it’s worth a quick call to your local jurisdiction or HOA before scheduling. We’re happy to talk it through with you on the quote visit.

Are you licensed and insured?

Yes. Solid Ground Land and Excavation Services is fully licensed and insured to operate throughout Missouri. Our operators are OSHA-10 and OSHA-30 certified.

How do I get a quote?

Start with a free consultation — we can often quote smaller jobs by phone. For larger or more complex properties, we’ll schedule a site visit at no charge. Call or text Hap at (816) 316-0261 or fill out our online request form.
